Intro to Yoga
The adepts of the ideological movement, as well as the
persons who practice yoga, are happy to describe the marvelous
control of their body and the magic they feel when carrying out
certain yoga exercises.
The ideology promoted by yoga activists states the fact that
profound liberation from the strict limitations imposed by
flesh, together with emancipation from the delusions of sense,
can be easily achieved through the rituals promoted by this
classic system of Hindu philosophy.
People who practice yoga are called yogi and, for most of
them, the supreme object of knowledge is the universal spirit
Brahma. However, the number of yogi all over the world has
increased so much, that we can identify various groups, who
have different types of believes. Thus, there are minorities of
yoga practitioners who do not believe in God, or in any other
supreme powers, but seek to perfect self-knowledge.
Nevertheless, the ideal goal of all yoga practices is finding
the way miracles work, clairvoyance, etc.
In what concerns the history of the doctrines and practices
of yoga, they go back in time, from the period of Upanishads.
The founder of yoga, PataƱjali, elaborated a book, entitled
Yoga Sutra, where he presents most of the practices, together
with the philosophical foundation of the movement. Studies
demonstrate that PataƱjali derived the doctrine for his
ideological movement from Samkhya, which is the oldest of the
existing classic systems of Hindu philosophy.
If referred to as a system of practice, yoga has developed
over the ages the condition of being a very influential feature
of Hinduism. The reason why this philosophical movement
exercised such an incredible power on the Hindus is mainly
related to the wonders attribute to it, as well as to the fact
that it promotes the carrying out of austerities, to which
Hindus are strongly inclined. Moreover, the same strong Yoga
influences can be noted in Buddhism practices, which is one of
the religions famous for its spiritual exercises and trances
states.
Gradually, knowledge of yoga practices and ideology spread
towards the West, where more and more people seemed to be eager
and fascinated to learn more about it. Famous philosophers,
from various countries of the world and having rather different
philosophical believes expressed their interest in analyzing
the incredibly overwhelming states of mind and body one can
experience, after periodically practicing yoga.
More than a simple philosophical movement, yoga has slowly
turned into a movement having different applications in various
areas of activity. Hence, doctors have started, during the last
decades, to prescribe yoga treatments as ways of gaining back
the inner equilibrium and peace. Other specialists, such as
fitness experts, for example, encourage their students to
perform yoga exercises both before and after physical efforts,
as a mean of cleaning the body of impurities, of helping the
nerves and muscles get toned up and, in general, of creating a
state of health and well being that contributes to prolonging
human life.
To sum up, yoga practices have become more and more common
in various regions of the world and have gained people's
respect and appreciation, due to their incredible benefits.
